Venue

Who is this course for?

Personnel who are required to work at height on artificial climbing structures, such as climbing walls, high ropes courses, activity centres, schools or leisure centres. These may include managers,  instructors, floor walkers, reception staff, those carrying out equipment and structural inspections or maintenance, or route setters.

This training course is designed to provide you with the skills to enable safe and efficient access for work at height, rescue of co-workers and hauling tasks.  The course provides an understanding of relevant applicable legislation, safe systems of work, and equipment use. Practical techniques taught have been selected to best suit carrying out workplace tasks on an artificial climbing structure.  These include initial access, rigging, ascent and descent of ropes,  work positioning, passing deviations, hauling and co worker rescue. The course provides a comprehensive foundation of knowledge, training, and certification for anyone working on or around climbing walls.

Course Details

Duration: 2 Days
Venue: Flexible. Set dates will be run at regional indoor climbing walls, however course may be run at alternative venues by application.

Prerequisites

The minimum age of candidates is 18 years
Medically fit and healthy (if unsure, please contact us)
All candidates must be experienced climbing wall users, which would usually mean they meet the required standard to use a roped climbing facility without supervision, i.e competent at belaying and top rope climbing.

Course Content

This is a theoretical and practical course covering:

  • Legislation – e.g. Work at Height Regulations 2005, Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER)
  • Types of protection against falls from a height
  • Types of access using Personal Fall Protection Equipment
  • Selection of Personal Fall Protection Equipment
  • Personal Fall Protection Equipment Pre-use checks
  • Fitting and adjustment of Personal Fall Protection Equipment before climbing
  • Knots and rigging of working lines
  • Ascent and Descent of working lines
  • Use of work positioning lanyards
  • Passing deviations
  • Hauling and lowering loads, including the use of mechanical advantage
  • Workshop discussion and practical tasks of typical climbing wall work at height tasks
  • Rescue and considerations for incidents involving harness suspension
Assessment

The course assessment is by short written test and continuous practical assessment by Lyon staff.

Certification

A certificate of attendance and assessment of training will be issued to successful candidates. Certificate valid for three years from date of assessment.
